Gastric Band
What is a gastric band? This term refers to a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, which is a device that is implanted into a client by way of bariatric surgery. This device is designed for individuals who are obese and who have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 of greater. The gastric band is a restricting device made of inflatable silicone that that goes around the top portion of the stomach. In order to do this the doctor must perform laparoscopic surgery.
Contrary to some myths floating around out there, a gastric band is not an easy cure-all solution available to all overweight patients. Even more so than liposuction surgery, a gastric band is only recommended for obese clients who want to take a drastic step because other weight loss methods (and surgeries) have proven unsuccessful. A gastric band is comparable to gastrointestinal surgical operation and successful cases have seen patients lose over 60% of their excess body weight.
This gastric band creates a pouch at the top of the stomach which can hold anywhere from 110 to 220 grams of food for each meal. The pouch is filled with food and then the band starts to slow the passage of more oncoming food into the stomach area. Since the upper part of the stomach now appears to be full, the brain is tricked into assuming the entire stomach is full. The result is that the person feels hungry less often, feels completely full at a faster rate and desires to eat smaller portions. In the end, these steps can help in weight loss.
How is the band adjusted once inside? This takes place by a small access port that is placed under the person's skin. Through this port, the doctor sends saline solution using a special non-coring needle. When saline reaches the band, it starts to expand, which in turn places direct pressure around the outside of the stomach. The gastric band is filled over the course of several visits to the doctor.
There are less than 10 adjustable gastric bands available for clients today. Not all doctors perform this surgery, but some do, and especially in cases where other weight loss methods have proven unsuccessful. It must be said that in order for a recovering client to maintain the weight loss this band surgery brings, he or she must start dieting, exercising and performing band maintenance. If you are interested in this type of surgery, talk to your doctor.
